Josh Gifford, who recently handed over the training licence at Downs Stables, Findon, to his son Nick, was honoured by the Variety Club of Great Britain last week.

The event was the 30th annual Sportsmen's Award ceremony in London.

Gifford, overcoming obvious emotion, said: "I don't know what I'm doing here, just look at these two and look at what they have achieved. I have just been lucky."

He was pointing at wheelchair-bound Isabel Newstead and one-armed Danny Crates.

Newstead won gold in the Sydney Paralympics in 2000 for pistol shooting, while Crates has excelled in rugby and athletics since losing his right arm in an accident.
