British customers are among the most disloyal in Europe, only staying with a bank if they are satisfied with the service and value for money they receive, a report claims.

Market analyst Datamonitor said emotional factors such as using the same bank as your parents were fast becoming history, as people instead scoured the market for the best deal.

It said 41 per cent of customers in the UK thought most people shopped around for financial products, compared with just 22 per cent in France and an average of 27 per cent across the whole of Europe.

The group said the change in consumer attitudes had been brought about by new players entering the market with enticing offers and large mergers creating banking giants.
