A dog owner took matters into her own hands after her pet was injured by a shard of glass.

Julia Robinson, from Polegate, was furious when blood began to pump from border collie Skip during a holiday in Rye.

The two-and-a-half-year-old black and white dog had trodden on a broken bottle and needed stitches in its front paw.

Far from being relieved to get back home, Mrs Robinson was horrified to discover piles of broken glass in Polegate train station car park, where she regularly walks Skip.

Mrs Robinson, 48, decided the only way to prevent more harm coming to her own and others' dogs was to clear the glass away herself.

She said: "We have a major problem with glass here in Polegate and my dog was so badly injured I thought the only way to get rid of it was to clean it away myself.

"I can't leave it in there any longer. Normally he's always off the lead but he's got no choice at the moment. Some people are so thoughtless."

Christine Berry, who runs the Centre Drug Store in Polegate and sits on the town council, said there were problems with glass and minor cases of vandalism in the town.

She said: "We do have lots of broken glass round the shopping centre here."
