A Nunn (Letters, June 7) defended Christianity against the charge of being (partly, at least) responsible for atrocities such as the Holocaust.

Unfortunately, those responsible for murdering an estimated six million Jews - and doing their utmost to hide this from the world - were brought up in a supposedly Christian country called Germany. Other Christian countries, including our own, denied knowledge.

There are other events in history that are not particularly good advertisements for God-fearing religion (not just Christianity), such as the troubles in Northern Ireland and the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York.

Is anyone seriously suggesting that Christianity has made no contribution whatever to the wars and other hostilities of the past 1,000 years?
