Crawley sprinter Carley Wenham has broken the Sussex 100m record.

She did it at the Loughborough international match on what turned out to be a great day for Sussex athletes.

Wenham, the reigning All England Schools junior 100m champion, was eight metres clear of Kelly Thomas (Sale) in 11.79sec. Despite running into a slight head wind, she beat the 21-year-old Sussex record by one hundredth of a second.

Wenham's time is the sixth fastest by a Briton over 100m this season. Wenham is in a group being groomed for the World Youth Games in Canada next month.

Horsham Blue Star's Clare Harman is not having much luck with windy conditions this season. She won her 100m hurdles invitation race with another sub-14 second run but the following wind was too strong and her time of 13.75sec won't be recognised as a Sussex record.

Julia Bennett, one of the top British heptathletes who teaches at Brighton's Cardinal Newman School, did well to win the high jump (1.80m) in windy conditions, the third best height by a British woman this season.

Brighton and Hove's Sarah Fielding-Smith, competing as a guest, was fifth (1.65m).

County champion Rachael Ogden (Worthing), competing for the Loughborough University team, timed her run to perfection to win the 800m in 2min.07.57sec.

Andy Robinson (Horsham) clocked 8min.56.59sec for second in the 3,000m steeplechase and Tim Bayley (Brighton) was second in the 800m (1min.53.0sec).

Sarah Tomlins (Horsham) and Duncan Malins (Haywards Heath) have started their competitive seasons later than most but looked in good shape.

Tomlins was third in the 400m (56.6sec) and Malins third in the 110m hurdles (13.82sec).

Amala Onuora (Eastbourne) notched up an eight-metre victory in the 100m (12.1sec), a time only she and Carley Wenham have bettered this season among Sussex performers, at the Sussex Schools Championships at Crawley. France O'Gorman (Hastings) improved the hammer record she set last year to 32.10m.
