A motorcyclist was seriously injured when his machine caught fire following a crash in East Sussex.

The rider, in his late 30s, collided with a Citroen Berlingo after he turned on the B2089, Battle Road, at Cripps Corner, near Battle, at 8.25pm yesterday.

A spokesman for Battle fire station said the bike slid under the car and heat from the machine caused fuel to ignite, setting both vehicles alight.

Two fire crews from Battle and Broad Oak attended the scene and brought the fire under control.

The road was closed for several hours while crash investigation officers gathered evidence and cleared the road of debris.

The motorcyclist was taken to the Conquest Hospital, Hastings with serious injuries, while the occupants of the Citroen were shaken but otherwise unhurt.

Sergeant Keith Ellis is appealing for witnesses to the collision to call 0845 6070999.
