Sprint duo Carley Wenham and Wade Bennett-Jackson were in a class of their own at the Sussex Schools' Championships.

They broke championship intermediate records in their heats and finals at Crawley.

Wenham, 15, who set a Sussex record of 11.79sec last week, romped home in the 100m.

She clocked 12.4sec in her heat to remove three-tenths-of-a-second from the 20-year-old championship record and removed a further fifth-of-a-second in the final when she romped home by over a second ahead of second-placed Francesca Gregory (Ouse Valley).

Wenham (Crawley) is unbeaten over 100 this season.

Bennett-Jackson, 16, ran 22.0sec in his 200m heat to beat the record set 26 years ago by Ray Key (Brighton and Hove) and equalled by Andy Drinkwater (Bognor).

He improved it by another four-tenths-of-a-second in the final (21.6sec) which puts him ninth on the Sussex all-time list.

Eastbourne sprinter Jason Hussain chased him home in a personal best 22.3sec.

Bennett-Jackson, from Worthing, said: "I'm quite happy with that. I was aiming for 21.6sec and will take the weekend off to prepare for the National Under-20 Championships."

High jumper Ben Smith (Worthing) fulfilled the promiseshowed when he won the junior title two years ago by upping the five-year-old intermediate championship record with a personal best 1.96m.

Ellen Howarth-Brown (Chichester) equalled the one-year-old record of Jenny Bliss (Brighton and Hove) in the 300m hurdles, winning in 44.1sec. Cara Paine (Hastings), running in only her fourth race over the distance, produced a personal best All England Schools Championship standard time of 46.2sec.

Winner Frances O'Gorman (Hastings) bettered her own senior hammer record with 32.10m and Kelly Coombs (Hastings) won the intermediate (31.12m).

Holly Weaver (Steyning) won the first intermediate pole vault with 2.60m.

The only junior record was in the long jump when Emanuel Bajowa improved the 6.07m mark set in 1978 by fellow Eastbourne athlete Kwasi Akah to 6.10m.

There was a tight battle in the junior 100m when Amy Bryant (Brighton and Hove) and Laura Hitchman (Mid Sussex), who has just returned from injury, were both credited with 13.1sec. Bryant dipped to take the title.

In the intermediate boys' 800m, Scott Harris (Hailsham), the reigning junior champion, held off a determined Daniel Stepney (Brighton).

The team for the All England Championships at Sheffield next month is announced this weekend.

Dominique Haynes completed a remarkable comeback when she lifted the girls' intermediate 200m.

The Hurstpierpoint College pupil had given up athletics after being sidelined for 12 months with glandular fever.

But her triumph in the Sussex Schools' Championships puts her in line for a place in the county team for the All England Schools event.

Dominique's success came with the help of her college which provided a resistance harness to build up her power, speed and add variety to her training under the supervision of John Green, head of PE.

The Crawley club runner said: "It was a shock to win. I was entered for the Mid Sussex Championships by my school. I hadn't competed for a year and had a few weeks training and won. That qualified me for Crawley but I didn't expect to win a county title.

"Glandular fever makes you very tired and I needed 20 hours sleep a day. I tried netball, hockey and swimming but it was too soon. I had a relapse and rested.

"I wasn't going to bother with athletics again but with the encouragement of my friends, like Carley Wenham, I've decided to get back into it."

Dominique, 15, opted for the 200m to avoid English Schools champion Carley Wenham (Crawley) in the 100m.

She said: "I was runner-up to her in the 100m at the Sussex Schools and AAA Championships last year just before I felt the effects of my glandular fever so I thought I'd give myself more opprtunity if I chose to run in the 200m."

Her mother Karen, said: "I think she has surprised the medical people. She has got on with things and I'm proud of her."

Roedean School enjoyed success at Crawley. Iris Kwok (senior high jump), Amy Bryant (junior 100m) and the junior relay team of Bryant, Samantha Hayward, Jade Wilson and Victoria Lewin won gold medals. Ashlin Humphreys (intermediate shot) and Victoria Bryant (senior 800m) claimed silver medals.

Humphreys and Amy Bryant have been selected for Sussex who host a South East Inter-County junior match against Surrey and Hampshire at Lewes on Saturday (11.00am).
