It is good news the renovation of historic buildings is to be a priority for Brighton and Hove City Council but it is unfortunate so many council-owned buildings have been allowed to fall into a derelict state.
Marlborough House was well maintained by East Sussex County Council but when it reverted to Brighton Council, the neglect started so it was in poor condition when it was sold to Eurolink.
Stanmer House suffers from dry and wet rot after 20 years of neglect by the council, though it has now been leased to a developer who hopes to save it.
Number 3 Old Steine is roofless and shored up after years of neglect.
The Birdcage Bandstand is so derelict that even the scaffolding erected to prop it up is now deteriorating, yet millions have been spent tarting up the seafront.
The listed stables at Patcham Place are knocked about every day by Ecovert's machinery.
When will councils realise buildings are like cars in that they need regular servicing otherwise they fall into decay and become a financial crisis?
