A violent criminal launched a foul-mouthed tirade against Worthing magistrates after being denied bail.

Emma Dewey, 29, of Shelley Road, Worthing, appeared before the court for sentence after being convicted of burgling a pensioner and assaulting a toddler.

The trouble started when she was asked to take off her cap as she was brought up to the dock from a holding cell.

As she was asked if she understood her convictions, she screamed abuse.

The court heard she had stolen property worth £1,455 from a pensioner's home on February 1 and was convicted in May. She also admitted common assault on February 2.

Kirsten Sharp, prosecuting, said: "The victim of the burglary is an 86-year-old pensioner. The victim of the assault is a three-year-old boy."

Dewey was told she would not be granted bail as the case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report, and had to be restrained as she struggled with prison guards in the dock, yelling more abuse.

She is to be sentenced on July 25 at Chichester Crown Court.
