Sussex riders have paid their final respects to Cliff Sharp.

Cliff, a 59-year-old member of Eastbourne Rovers, collapsed after a heart attack during a walking holiday with his wife, Carol, in the Scottish borders earlier this month.

He belonged to Eastbourne Rovers throughout his racing life and nearly 30 members attended his funeral in Brighton last week.

Cliff, who lived in Denton, won his club's best all-rounder title 25 times between 1965 and 1990.

He beat the hour for 25 miles over 300 times and raced at all distances up to 12 hours. Cliff was a consistent winner of open time trials across the county and beyond.

Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers), 70, was best veteran on standard (23min.50sec) in the first of two ten-mile time trials organised by Bognor Regis CC this month. Louise Denton (27min.29sec) was fastest woman.

Major engineering works on part of the course at Tangmere persuaded organisers to switch the race, in memory of former race secretary Jimmy Gilbert, to an alternative route at Halnaker.

The same course looks certain to be used for the 90 competitors who have entered the second event next Thursday evening.

Nick Rudkin (VC Bayeux, (1hr.55min.51sec) beat winning team leader Lloyd Grayston (Eastbourne Rovers) into second place by just over a minute in the East Sussex CA 50-mile race.

Grayston was well backed by clubmates Matthew Scott and Colin Jacques who formed the winning team.

Tristan Court (Brighton Mitre) was third.
