Safety improvements have been completed at a West Sussex boating lake where a toddler drowned.

It is almost two years to the day since two-year-old Alexander Clark died after wandering from an activity session.

He was found drowned in the lake at Mewsbrook Park, Littlehampton.

After his death in June 2001 the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) carried out an investigation and raised a series of safety concerns.

Now work on the £80,000 project has been completed.

Arun District Council has blamed delays on a supplier who let down its contractor.

Arun's Cabinet member for leisure Richard Wilby said: "The series of improvement works have been carried out on the recommendation of RosPA and are aimed to benefit the community as a whole.

"It is unfortunate the works were delayed for a period of time but they are now finished and will enable visitors to enjoy their time at the park and lake in a safe and secure environment."

Three fenced decks have been built to provide a secure footing for people who want to get closer to the water.

New shrub beds have been planted around parts of the lake to deter people from getting too close and concrete sides to the lake and the area around the boat hire concession office have been refurbished.

New signs have been installed at the entrances to Mewsbrook Park.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded at the toddler's inquest.
