A workman was trapped for more than two hours after van towing a grass cutter jack-knifed on a country road.
The man is believed to have been on the grass cutting machine yesterday while it was being towed on a trailer up a hill in Cob Lane, Ardingly.
It was too heavy for the van, which jack-knifed on the single-track road.
The machine tipped over, trapping the man underneath.
Firefighters from Haywards Heath and Crawley were called at about 12.45pm.
They had to use lifting equipment to free the man.
He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.
