A West Sussex beauty spot will continue to be used as a 4x4 rally track despite protests from conservationists.

Part of Angmering Park, which was inherited by the daughters of the former duke and duchess of Norfolk, has been used by off-road vehicles for more than a year.

Residents and nature groups are trying to put a stop to the rallies, because the park, near Arundel, is a site of nature conservation interest and lies within an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Despite the opposition, the owners are preparing to offer the operator of the 4x4 rallies, Steyning-based John Morgan Corporate Entertainment, a three-year lease.

People living in Shellbridge Road, Slindon, say their peaceful village lives have been shattered by the arrival of up to 200 of the vehicles each month. On one occasion a tank even rolled past their homes.

Together with South Downs Conservation Board, Arun District Council and West Sussex County Council, residents are concerned about the implications of the activities on wildlife in the park on the estate run by managing agent Cluttons.

Sheridan Stevens, of Shellbridge Road, Slindon, who founded the Slindon Common Residents' Association, said people living in the area were furious with the decision.

She said: "It is very disappointing that Cluttons have decided to offer this lease. It is frustrating a large land owner should put profit before conservation."

Cluttons said it expected the lease to be signed by the end of July.

Associate partner David Penell said: "The lease has been on the table since we accepted Mr Morgan's tender. We are ironing out issues with Sussex Downs Conservation Board."

Operator Mr Morgan said he has been working with South Downs Conservation Board to pinpoint particular areas of concern. He said: "I'm not a destroyer of countryside."
