There was never any doubt the appeal to build The Martlets Hospice in Hove was going to succeed.

Launched by Prince Charles on a visit to Brighton, the appeal was run by some of the most ferocious fund-raisers in Sussex.

It was not an easy task but keeping the hospice, now six years old, operating smoothly and efficiently is an even tougher challenge.

Martlets Hospice Week aims to raise awareness of the work being done quietly and effectively and raise more much-needed money.

The Martlets provides compassionate care for many people who can no longer be cured and in most cases manages to enhance the quality of their lives even though that may not be for long.

But it also provides a service for friends and relatives of the sick, who are often also in need of help.

In some cases the hospice also provides a service for those who prefer to spend their final days in their own homes.

And it continues to help nearest and dearest get through a most traumatic time after the patient's death.

The Martlets is in a pleasant, light and friendly building, which feels more like a home than a hospital. It is doing wonderful work.

But that work cannot continue at the present level unless more money is given and that is where we can all help.
