An attempt to block plans for a seafront cycle route will come before councillors next week.
The controversial move to introduce a coastal route in Worthing are currently being resisted by residents' associations who think it will put pedestrians at risk.
Some borough councillors support a cycle route to help reduce traffic congestion and encourage a healthier mode of transport.
But proposals to have a route running from East Worthing to Ferring, specifically for bicycle use, have sparked complaints.
Now the Worthing Society has applied to West Sussex County Council to have a seafront walkway between Sea Lane, Ferring, and George V Avenue, Worthing, made into an official footpath.
The society hopes the application, if successful, would help defend the walkway from any changes.
Worthing's executive is expected to note a report on the society's plans on Tuesday before agreeing to let council officers submit comments on the matter to the county council.
Natalie Cropper, Worthing Society secretary, said: "We're putting in the application to safeguard pedestrians.
"It's the only bit we've got left where people can walk uninterrupted without fear of being run down by cyclists."
The Ilex Conservation Group is backing Worthing Society's efforts.
