Wade Bennett-Jackson is Sussex's best hope for a gold medal at the All-England Schools Championships in Sheffield on Saturday.

Worthing High intermediate athlete Wade competes in the 200m, Wade, who only just missed selection for this weekend's World Youth Games in Canada, has been in superb form this season.

The Sussex team will be without sprinter Carley Wenham (Crawley) and middle-distance runner Charlotte Browning (Chichester).

Both were potential medallists but will be in Canada.

But there is still quality in the team. Ellen Howarth-Brown (Chichester), second in the 300m hurdles last year, could pick up a medal and high jumper Sarah Fielding-Smith (Downlands, Hassocks) is another prospect for a top-three finish.

Sussex could provide surprises at inter-mediate level with Tom Bilham (Midhurst) in the 1,500m and Cara Paine (Hastings) in the 300m hurdles. Both are capable of making finals.

Javelin thrower Hayley Crosswell (Farlington School, Horsham) and Kelly Coombs (Helenswood School, Hastings), in the hammer, have earned late call-ups.

THREE Sussex girls will compete in the All-England Combined Events Championships.

Melanie Davies (Uplands, Wadhurst), Helen Morton (Hor-sham) and Hayley Crosswell (Farlington, Horsham) qualified at the South East event at Ashford.

Melanie was third in the junior penathlon with 2,627 points.

Helen was third in the senior heptathlon, totalling 3,301 points.

In the intermediate heptathlon, Hayley was fifth with a personal best 3,654 points, battling through the 80m hurdles (13.8sec), high jump (1.48m), shot putt (7.88m), 200m (28.4sec), long jump (4.51m), javelin (35.37m) and 800m (48.1sec).

Sussex were second in the junior team event.
