Pupils from a Worthing school have given a cash boost to a Sussex search and rescue team after team members helped with their sponsored walk.

The Sussex Lowland Search and Rescue (SusSAR) team was given a cheque for £1,000 by Worthing High School after playing a part in ensuring a sponsored walk last month was a success.

More than 800 students took part in the 12-mile return trek from the High School to Chanctonbury Ring, where Worthing Mayor James Doyle met them.

They were raising money for Whizz Kidz, a charity which supports disabled children by raising funds for the designing and building of customised wheelchairs and mobility aids.

The funds were used to pay for a wheelchair for an 18-month old child from Littlehampton who suffers from cerebral palsy.

Organisers of the walk said almost £10,000 had been raised from the event, and they showed their gratitude for SusSAR's help through a donation.

On the day, the team was able to provide communications along the route as well as basic first aid and transport for any injured walkers who required a lift back to the school.

Steve Cranswick, chairman of SusSAR, said: "We are happy the students raised so much money from the event and provide a Littlehampton infant with a valuable piece of equipment.

"We are grateful to Will Richards at the school for the donation and are glad the event proved to be a big success for both the organisers and the students."
