A home for disabled ex-servicemen is staging its popular summer open day and fete on Saturday.

The event, at Gifford House in Boundary Road, Worthing, will be opened by former MP and reporter Martin Bell.

The gates open at 2pm, with the 50p per head entrance fee providing access to the Band of the Welsh Guards, many stalls, tombola, a tea tent and games.

Gifford House is this autumn launching an appeal to help fund a £4 million redevelopment of the Queen Alexandra Hospital-Home for Disabled Ex-Servicemen.

The scheme will provide the residents with single en suite rooms as demanded by new Government legislation.

In September, ex-Welsh guardsman and Falklands veteran Simon Weston will be giving a talk in aid of Gifford House and the Royal Star and Garter Homes.

The event, on September 9, takes place at the Dome cinema in Worthing.

Simon was serving with the Welsh Guards during the Falklands War in June 1982 when Argentine planes bombed the troopship Sir Galahad.

He suffered horrific burns and lost many of his closest friends.

Tickets costing £6 are available from the Dome or Gifford House.

Tom Wye, president of the Worthing Combined Ex-Services Association, which has organised the talk said: "Simon is a passionate speaker and everything he utters comes from the heart.

"Don't miss this opportunity to hear a truly fine speaker and support the homes that care for our ex-servicemen. The residents of these homes have done their duty. Let us now do ours."
