Sussex discus record holder Claire Smithson has been selected to represent Great Britain in the European under-23 championships at Bydgoszcz in Poland next week

The Brighton and Hove City thrower is in her first year at St Mary's College, Kingston and, like many athletes, has found the first year away from home a little disruptive to her training.

Smithson has yet to hit top form but an early season throw of 54.39m bettered the standard required to compete in the games.

Now she is optimistic she will hit form at the right time.

Smithson competed in the World Youth Games at the same venue four years ago, when she finished 11th.

Crawley 800m runner Joel Kidger and Haywards Heath high hurdler Duncan Malins have been included in the Great Britain squad for a senior international match in Barcelona this weekend.

This is proving a good year for Sussex as far as international events are concerned. Crawley's Carley Wenham and Charlotte Browning (Chichester) are currently competing in the World Youth Olympics in Toronto.

Wade Bennett-Jackson from Worthing, who just missed selection for Toronto, is one of three Sussex athletes to be selected for the European Youth Olympics Festival in Paris later this month.

Bennett-Jackson, from Worthing, has been selected to contest both the 100m and 200m events.

Amala Onuora, from Eastbourne, has been selected to contest the women's 200m while Craig Ivemy from Hailsham will run in the 3,000m.

All three of these athletes are competing for the Sussex Schools team at Sheffield this weekend.
