Peter Moores admitted Sussex got it wrong in the field as their five sun-drenched days at Arundel ended on a low last night.
The county went down by six wickets to Derbyshire in the National League and also lost Matt Prior with a thigh strain sustained while fielding.
Prior was being examined today and could be doubtful for the key Championship tussle at Leicester, which starts tomorrow.
Former Sussex triallist Chris Bassano was Derbyshire's hero with an unbeaten 126, three runs less than Murray Goodwin had scored for Sharks as they set 233 to win.
Coach Moores said: "We fielded poorly which is a disappointment.
"We got two early wickets and maybe we came off it a bit after that.
"Once we had posted 230 we would look to defend it better but no complaints, Bassano played extremely well."
Bassano's innings came off 129 balls with 13 fours and two sixes as Derbyshire won with 20 deliveries in hand to leave Sharks one place off the bottom of the Division Two table.
Somerset are bottom having played two more games.
