Paul Hutchison raced in with 4-69 in 20.1 overs to lead a fightback as Sussex 2nd XI dismissed Hampshire for 378 on the opening day of their championship tussle at Hove.
The visitors, who won the toss on a good flat wicket, were well placed to post a score of more than 450 after reaching 334-5 at one stage.
But they collapsed after Sussex took the new ball and the last five wickets crashed for just 44 as the innings closed in 102.1 overs.
Hampshire caved in after Iain Brunnschweiler (49) and Greg Lamb (79) put on exactly 100 for the sixth wicket.
The slide began when Lamb, who fired 14 fours and a six off 127 balls, was run out by Krishna Singh at deep square leg.
Former Yorkshire pace bowler Hutchison later removed Brunnschweiler and also claimed the last two wickets.
He struck to take his first wicket to end an opening stand of 136 between Lawrence Prittipaul and James Hamblin by having the former leg before for 52, which included nine fours off 81 balls.
Hamblin, who played for the Sussex Seconds before joining Hampshire two years ago, went on to crack 123 from 171 balls, with 21 fours, before being bowled by Carl Hopkinson.
Hopkinson finished with 2-68 in 18 overs, while Billy Taylor got through 25 overs to have 2-63.
Sussex, seeking a third consecutive win, are giving a debut to right arm pace man Lee Harrison, brother of Paul who has already played for the Seconds, and he had 14 overs for a return of 0.42.
