More than 50 people have been arrested in the past two weeks by police using a vehicle number plate reader.
The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) team has been working across Sussex in the past four months to catch drug dealers and burglars.
The system works by scanning number plates and matching them against information stored in databases. It identifies stolen cars or those used in crimes.
Sussex Chief Constable Ken Jones, in his latest quarterly report, said more than 200 people had now been arrested using ANPR.
Stolen cars worth £75,600 and drugs worth £32,000 had also been recovered.
He said: "When a suspicious vehicle is recognised it becomes the focus of police targeted interceptions and inquiries, contributing to the unit's aim of depriving criminals of the use of roads."
