Passengers were held up for nearly two hours when their train was stopped after a fight broke out in a carriage.
Officers from Sussex Police were called to Worthing station by South Central staff following the incident, which is thought to have involved a man and his girlfriend.
The 7.41pm Portsmouth to Brighton service was held by police on Tuesday from 9.40pm.
They then handed the investigation over to the British Transport Police.
A spokesman for the transport police said officers were questioning a man in connection with the incident.
The spokesman said: "We have no details at all of the lady who was the victim of the assault. She went to hospital but refused treatment.
"If the lady comes to us and wants to make a complaint, we may be able to take the matter further."
The carriage in which the incident took place was declared a crime scene and sealed off.
Passengers continued their journey to Brighton after a delay of nearly two hours.
A spokesman for South Central today apologised to passengers for the delay.
