The future is unsure for the East Brighton College of Media Arts now that numbers are half the expected total.
It could be that Brighton and Hove City Council will eventually close the college. It still might be possible to revive it in some way.
But what is important for those still studying at the college is that they receive the best education it is possible to provide.
That is why the appointment of Karen Lees, deputy head at Varndean School, to be the day-to-day head at the college is a step in the right direction.
She has a proven record in education and will be determined to do her best for the children.
If by any chance the decision is for the college to continue, her work in keeping up morale could prove to be vital.
