Bob Geldof, The Bays, Pape and Cheikh and folk/pop duo Jo and Danny are our picks of the performers this week.

THE BAYS, Concorde 2, Brighton, July 18. These lads perform with a drummer, a bass and two keyboards. Already kicking up a storm at all the festivals, they only ever play live, never rehearse and have never written a song or lyric. It looks like there's only one way to find out what all the fuss is about. Starts 8pm, tickets £8. Call 01273 772770 for details.

BOB GELDOF AND HIS BAND, Chichester Cathedral, Chichester, July 20. The legendary Sir Bob has been known as quite a few things in his time - pop star, poet, Paula Yates' other half, open-plan politician, ubiquitous celebrity and media mogul. This gig is part of an international tour which started last January and is due to end in November. Starts 8pm, tickets £12 to £30. Call 01243 780192.

PAPE AND CHEIKH, Komedia, Brighton, July 21, Steeped in tradition from central Senegal but citing Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Joan Armatrading among their main influences these are true masters of African folk. They perform songs full of instrumental subtlety and all the anthemic choruses you could want. Starts 8.30pm, tickets £8/£6. Call 01273 647100.

It's Jo and Danny, Prince Albert, Trafalgar Street, Brighton, July 24. This Brecon-based husband-and-wife team provide odd folk/pop beats, beguiling vocals and bagpipes - a kind of Velvet Underground crossed with the Cocteau Twins. An evening to put your feet up while gulping down a glass or two of cider. Starts 8pm, tickets cost £4/£3.50, from Rounder Records on 01273 325440.
