Sammy the baby seagull was left dazed and confused after falling from his nest.

He was only a few hours old when he fell off the roof of Lesley-Anne Brennan's house.

Unable to get back to his parents, he tried to adopt the Brennan family but just couldn't find a way inside their home in Trafalgar Close, Peacehaven.

The chick has been pecking away at the glass in the patio doors to no avail and his mother has to feed him on the doorstep.

Mrs Brennan and her 30-year-old daughter Kerry-Lee have taken the clumsy gull to heart.

Mrs Brennan, 55, an assistant co-ordinator at Fiveways after-school club in Brighton, said: "We came home from work and saw this fluffy little baby chick sitting outside our patio door window trying to come in.

"It didn't seem to understand there was glass there and kept on pecking at it and falling against it. It was such a surprise."

Mrs Brennan said: "Watching Sammy is much better than watching television because you are really seeing nature at work and it's very interesting.

"Gulls seem to be very good parents and the three of them seem to be a very close family. They are constantly swooping about and "talking" to their baby, who often seems to be communicating back.

"It's really quite sweet."

Despite Sammy's friendly and tame nature the Brennans are wary when approaching him in case his mum or dad gets angry.

Mrs Brennan said: "We don't want to move him because the parents can be very protective.

"I was a bit frightened to get my washing in case I risked the wrath of the gulls.

"We have plumbers here fixing the boiler at the moment and we have even given them a mop to protect themselves if they get swooped on.

"It doesn't really bother us though and the gulls now seem to be realising we will not harm their baby.

"We'll really miss him when he learns to fly away."
