A leg injury in her opening event at the Sussex Veterans Championships at Broadbridge Heath denied Debbie Woolgar the chance of a century of gold medals.
Competing in the high jump Woolgar felt a twinge and from then on went through the motions but still managed to add four titles to her catalogue.
She took the over-35s' high jump title, despite the injury, with a clearance of 1.40m.
Her other three victories, in the shot putt, javelin and the discus, where she only took two standing throws, saw her performances well below her normal efforts.
Woolgar decided she would withdraw from the long jump because it was her take off leg that was causing problems.
Four successes took her total to 99 Sussex individual gold medals since she first started winning county titles as an under-15 pentathlete in 1979.
She said: "I still enjoy competing. This was not a good day for me but I have no plans to retire from competitive athletics and I am planning to keep fit enough for the rest of this season.
"There are still a couple of league matches were I want to support my club, which is why I did not want to aggravate my injury, and I am certainly planning to compete again next season."
There were also four victories for Eastbourne's Barry Morris in the over-40 men's events but, unlike Woolgar, Morris came to the forefront in Sussex as a veteran in the past few years.
Although not matching Woolgar's record, Carol Webb, of Phoenix, won county and country schools events as a young sprinter and ran for Sussex at the All England Schools Championships.
Carol Webb won both the 400 and 800 metres, as well as the long jump.
Brighton and Hove's Claire Smithson reached the final round of the discus in the European Under-23 Championships in Poland.
In a qualifying competition where only three throwers reached the qualifying distance of 55 metres, Smithson went through in tenth with 50.60m.
Worthing's Rachel Ogden arrived in Barcelona with the Great Britain team for the international against Italy and Catalonia only to discover the 800 metres race had been removed for the programme.
The British runners were added to the 1,500 metres and Ogden responded with a brilliant run that removed seven seconds from her previous best to take second place, just six metres down on fellow Brit Kerry Gillibrand in 4min. 19.48sec.
There was a third place for Haywards Heath's Duncan Malins and fourth for Crawley's Joel Kidger.
Sussex discus record holder Claire Smithson finished eighth in the European Under-23 Championships at Bydgoszcz in Poland. She launched three efforts over the 50m mark and her best was 51.97m.
