Council bosses are drafting a ten-year plan to boost tourism in Brighton and Hove.

The city council is asking residents, businesses and experts to help map out the future.

With the Economic Partnership, it has produced a consultation document called Your Future, Your Say.

Head of tourism Adam Bates said: "Tourism is central to the city's economy.

"Eight million visitors annually bring in an estimated £380 million, helping support 13,000 jobs. A downturn of just ten per cent could create 1,000 redundancies.

"Our tourism industry is unique in that it's made up of 1,000 businesses from large to small. Formulating the plan isn't something for the council to do alone.

"We need to work together to find a common view."

About 500 copies of the document are being sent out to tourism-related businesses, transport providers, politicians, national bodies, government agencies, residents and community groups.

It asks questions about quality, competitiveness, public safety, cultural investment, transport and promotion.

Deputy council leader Sue John said: "The idea is to stimulate debate and get as many ideas from as many quarters as we can. These are crucial questions about how we keep the city's lifeblood pumping.

"I urge people to look at the consultation document on the council web site www.brighton-hove.gov.uk and respond by mail, fax or email."
