A leading green council is set to go even greener as it steps up its recycling work.

Adur District Council was years ahead of its neighbours in Brighton and Hove in running a doorstep collection service for recyclable household waste.

Its pioneering Blue Box scheme runs fortnightly collections of recyclable rubbish in Shoreham, Southwick and Lancing.

Now the the council is set to go weekly from September 1, as it bids to meet government targets to raise the amount of waste it recycles to 33 per cent.

Other initiatives being introduced include smaller boxes to make it easier for the elderly and less able to handle them.

Extra blue boxes will be delivered to homes which recycle more and a new refuse and recycling information leaflet will be delivered to every home in the district.

Council recycling staff will also carry out surveys in the area to find out what people think about the service.

Councillor Paul Graysmark, community services chairman, said: "We want to provide an even better service and knowing what residents think about it can only help us to do this."
