I have read many articles and letters relating to the funding of The Brighton Dome and I think the price of the tickets is an important issue.
At one time it was common practice for everyone in a town to visit the local Hippodrome or music hall on a weekly basis.
Shows changed regularly and the price of seats was relevant to the average working person's wage. This is certainly not the case now.
My last visit to The Dome for a concert cost our party of four £23.50 each for a medium-priced seat, plus an additional charge for a programme.
This cost, together with the price of refreshments during the interval, made for quite an expensive evening out, for a show that lasted two hours.
This was not something that could be repeated too often, however enjoyable.
The Dome was only half full on that occasion, so surely it would be better policy to reduce the price of the seats and fill the venue?
Identical shows in Blackpool cost half the price and Brighton charges are on a par with London, yet this is a relatively low wage area.
Many residents would be only too pleased to visit this venue on a regular basis but the over-riding factor which prohibits this is the cost.
It is, therefore, ironic to suggest residents should subsidise ticket prices through their council tax when it is something they cannot afford themselves.
