Problems with drunks intimidating shoppers in Worthing have fallen since a pub closed.

Residents complained it was often a trial to shop in Tesco in West Durrington because of unruly behaviour in and around The Corner House.

The pub in New Road, next to the supermarket, was a focal point for problems.

Teenagers congregated on its forecourt then intimidated shoppers, drunks made a nuisance of themselves and vandalism attacks were a constant annoyance for shop staff and residents.

One incident in May involved a 17-year-old girl who passed out after being hit with a bottle outside the bar.

Worthing licensing officer Mike Webb said: "The Corner House died a natural death through lack of custom and the company, Punch, is currently choosing not to re-open it."

A Tesco spokesman said: "Since the pub closed we have seen a reduction in trouble.

"We have also put in security measures to reduce disturbances and incidents in and around the store and they seem to be working. It's making it a more pleasant place to work and shop.

"When the pub was open we had drunks walking in, graffiti problems and youths at the entrance intimidating shoppers."

John Grinstead, 50, of nearby Shelby Road, is delighted by the closure. He said: "It was terrible. Going to Tesco in the evening was like running the gauntlet."

Durrington Councillor Nick Rodgers agreed The Corner House had a bad reputation but thought closure was not the answer.

He said: "We need a pub that strikes a balance."
