Elation turned to anger for East Sussex 100-mile champion Andy Green after he took a wrong turn.

The Brighton Mitre rider went off course in the last few miles of the Sussex 100-mile Championship which may have cost him the title.

Green, still on a high after his East Sussex triumph 12 days ago, said: "I was on schedule to finish in around 4hr.2min but I went off course after missing a marshal.

"By the time I got back on course I had lost all my rhythm and finished in 4hr.16min.25sec.

"Perhaps the marshal only went missing briefly, but I'm angry because there were plenty of helpers round the course handing out drinks, so there should have been enough marshals to ensure this didn't happen."

The open event was won by Hampshire's Malcolm Cox (St Raphael) in 3hr.51min.32sec.

Mitre rider Tristan Court finished second in 4hr.3min. 55sec to win the Sussex title with Andy Walker (Hants RC) and Tony Hart (Axiom) second and third.

The Mitre team (Court, Green, Mark Skinner) still won the team title.

Sussex riders John Limpus and Steve Geran (GS Stella) won the bronze medal in the National Tandem Clubs' 25-mile championship at Poole.

The winners were East London riders Zak Carr and Glenn Taylor (API) who recorded 46min.53sec. The Stella pair were level with Carr and Taylor at halfway but slipped back to finish in 51min 5sec.

Limpus said: "We slowed towards the finish when the wind got up but we were still pleased to bring back a national medal."

London rider Keith Coffey (Bec) clocked 53min.4sec to win his club's 25-mile time trial over a course in the Horsham area.

East Grinstead's Steve Dennis placed second in 54min.9sec and Paul Byford (Crawley CC) was seventh with 57min.56sec.

Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers) recorded 1hr 1min.45sec to win the veterans' handicap.

Burgess Hill's Paul Howard (VC Etoile) is attempting to ride the entire route of the Tour De France. He is setting off at 4am every morning, hours ahead of the race, to complete all the stages. His wife, Catherine, said: "He has a knee problem and it will be tough for him in the Pyrenees but I believe he'll do it."
