A service to commemorate the daring Dieppe raid of the Second World War was held at the East Sussex port where hundreds of soldiers set sail for France.
Councillor Dennis Forsdike, Mayor of Newhaven, was joined yesterday by representatives from Dieppe, the Canadian government, the Royal British Legion and the Veterans' Association to mark the 61st anniversary of the raid.
Coun Forsdike said: "Despite the passing of the years, the turnout yesterday, on the hottest day of the year, shows that people will not forget the brave deeds by Canadian and British forces at Dieppe in 1942.
"Next week, on the day of the anniversary, I will be honoured to lay wreaths in Dieppe on behalf of the people of Newhaven. It is always a very moving experience."
Wreaths were laid at the Canadian war memorial in the town in memory of the hundreds of Canadian soldiers who took part in Operation Jubilee on August 19, 1942.
The mayors were taken to and from the service at St Michael's Church in a Second World War jeep.
