Long ago, I said that building a Tesco supermarket in Church Road was a mistake.
By offering to build a new school, Tesco was allowed to build its new market on the gasholder site.
It built the school - and very nice it is but there are no playing fields where kids used to play cricket and football and hold their sports days.
Years ago, Iceland, Co-op, Woolworths and Boots enlarged their stores and reduced prices.
There was a large car park with 140 spaces at the rear of Iceland and the Co-op, with an alleyway at the bottom, allowing entry into the bottom of George Street.
Now the only large car park is at Tesco and who, having parked their car, will want to walk all the way to Blatchington Road when they can get all they need in Tesco?
New laws now allow pedestrianisation until 6pm which means, by the time motorists are allowed in, most of the few existing shops will have closed.
Eventually George Street will be left with two banks, building societies and charity shops. How's that for progress?
