Burgess Hill made a winning debut in the Dr Martens League eastern division.
But after the 1-0 win at Salisbury yesterday, manager Gary Croydon admitted they have a lot to learn at this level.
He said: "We have a young side and will learn quickly. We have always known we have nothing to fear."
Salisbury, with much the same squad that finished fourth last season, should have offered stiff opposition but it was only in the closing stages that they put a strong Hillians back three under any concerted pressure.
The only goal came in stoppage time at the end of the first half when the hosts were caught on the break as Richard Carter sent Steve Harper racing through to make no mistake.
Although the new boys were under pressure after the interval, Harper could have sealed the points when presented with a clear chance by Leo Day on 61 minutes.
But in the end it needed a couple of great saves by Pat Gannon to deny Salisbury a point.
