It was slogan-minded Tony Blair who once bleated "education, education, education" in the hope that this phrase would win votes.
Now the word has apparently been latched onto by our police in a way I find puzzling.
The Argus has commendably highlighted the fact the new street drinking ban in Brighton and Hove is, sadly, being greeted with reactions of "cheers" by boozers as they carry on drinking alcohol in public.
I have sympathy for the police about stopping this as it's so easy for politicians to pass laws they don't have to enforce.
But I was baffled by remarks from a senior officer who said that initially officers would be warning and "educating" drinkers before getting tough.
I have noticed the Norfolk Square lawn-loungers over the years and had cause to speak to them a couple of times - once when they were abusing an elderly lady and later when they were endeavouring to play soccer with a parked car.
While I had some teaching experience in my younger years, educating them about the folly of their booze-induced behaviour would have been totally beyond my capabilities.
I would be fascinated to know how the boys in blue hope to accomplish this.
