Join a new release party, try for a dance with Usher in LA, get more Kandi for your head or witness the world's greatest air guitar band.

PHONIC:HOOP, Enigma, Brighton, August 30: This will be a party to celebrate the release of the new compilation on Tru Thoughts. Shapes One is the first in a new series of music compiled by Robert Luis to highlight a number of new artists from across the world who have been sending their music to the label. The music covers a huge variety of styles, including broken beat, funk, jazz, hip hop, downtempo, bossa and breaks - the distinctive mix of sounds that make Phonic:Hoop such a musical joy. He will be joined by guests from the album so make sure you make it down for a night of "good quality music - regardless of genre". If you have never owned a Tru Thoughts compilation, this could be a good place to start. For good music that celebrates the city's cultural diversity, the label's releases are always a good place to start. 10pm to 2am. £6/5. Tel: 01273 694617.

HED KANDI, Honeyclub, Brighton, August 29: It's that time of the month again but I won't bang on ... let's just say Hed Kandi's visits to Brighton have been pretty damned glorious. Head honcho Mark Doyle and John Jones will be representing the Kandi team tonight so expect some top-notch funky house. It's billed as a Disco Kandi launch night (there is a new compilation due next week) and everyone should be dancing. The back room remains the domain of Johnny Nicely who goes back to love while everyone jumps up and down (hopefully in time to the music). The action runs from 10pm to 3am and admission is £12/10. Tel: 07000 446639.

BUST THE BOB, Concorde 2, Brighton, August 30: The Bust The Box will be meeting the Bob Dobbs bunch for hours of musical mayhem. Even more tantalising is the promise of an exclusive DJ set from Piss (like Kiss but better) - the "world's greatest air-guitar band". The night runs from 10pm to 3am. Admission is £5/4. Tel: 01273 772770.

MTV SHAKEDOWN, Honeyclub, Brighton, August 31: MTV comes to Brighton on Sunday to give the city's movers and shakers the chance to fly to Los Angeles to dance with r 'n' b superstar Usher in his next video. The final UK heat of the competition will take place at the Honeyclub, hosted by VJ Amelia and Heidi Range of the Sugababes, and filmed for MTV. Two finalists from the Brighton heat will then be flown to Portugal to compete in the European final to win the chance to work with Usher and his dancers and choreographers. Contestants and after-show party people will dance to DJ Touche, who recently signed a four-single deal with New Jersey's Subliminal. Doors open at 11pm but if, like me, you don't fancy your chances of winning, make your way to the after-show party, from 10pm to 2am and costing £4. Visit www.mtv.co.uk/shakedown for more details.
