All sorts of machines will whizz through the air at the Shoreham Air Show, which celebrates 100 years of flight this year.

The Argus-sponsored spectacular is organised by the Royal Air Forces' Association and is the only air show in the country run entirely by volunteers with all proceeds going to charity.

It will take place at Shoreham airport on Saturday and Sunday against the backdrop of Lancing College and includes five hours of flying displays by all varieties of aircraft.

There will be appearances by all three military services and display teams.

The aim this year is to make it easier for the public to communicate with the crews.

With this in mind, an autograph centre is being set aside with regular updates as to who is available, including some of the air crew who served in the Gulf.

Among the highlights will be the Utterly Butterly wing-walking team which will send out four of its special biplanes flying in formation.

Denny Dobson will attempt a "triple knife-edge ribbon cut", a 250mph stunt performed only 1ft from the ground.

There will also be regular displays from the likes of spitfires, hurricanes and a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. A first for the show will be the Robin Cousins synthetic ice rink with performances from champion Jayne Torvill OBE on Sunday.

There will also be ground displays, helicopter rides, classic cars, a craft marquee, a funfair and children's entertainment shows.

Doors open at 9am and the air display runs from 11.30am until 5.30pm.

There is free parking and tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children in advance or £14 and £7 on the gate. Call 01273 441545.
