Thousands of people have rung a complaints hotline in anger over a bins crisis in Brighton and Hove.

Operators at the headquarters of the city council's in-house team CityClean have been deluged with calls as litter mounts in the streets.

On Saturday, binmen had been expected to work to clear the backlog left from the bank holiday for a one-off payment of £230.

But as talks continued last night, it emerged the workforce would not stick to the agreement.

Union leaders and CityClean bosses have now reached a stalemate.

Meetings were continuing this weekend and sources said the workforce was on the verge of a walkout.
