Worthing Mayor James Doyle presented a special award to a leading light in the town's Royal British Legion.
Councillor Doyle handed over an RBL badge to John Hobbs, a long-serving member of the branch, who has twice been president and also chairman.
The ceremony took place at Chapman Court, where the branch meets.
Harry Hunt, secretary of Worthing RBL, said: "This is John's second term as president and he has been chairman for quite a number of years.
"He has kept the branch going really."
