Mr Scruff hits the decks, Sixties soul fans have a new night, there's a late launch at Boygirl and Nottingham deep housers Club DiY make a return visit.
ETCH, Concorde 2, Brighton, Sept 5: This is the first Etch since June and, more importantly, the third birthday of Mr Scruff's South Coast residency. Scruffy is a big-name DJ these days, which is no surprise to anyone who has enjoyed one of his six-hour Etch sets, building his reputation by hitting the parts other DJs cannot reach. If that isn't enough, one of my colleagues tells me she "got lucky" with a nice young man the last time Etch scored its name across Concorde 2, which can't be bad. Unfortunately, the relationship was not as long-lived as one of Scruff's sets but that's the way it goes - and at least the music was good while it lasted. If you like funk, soul, jazz, hip hop and any other style of music worth dancing to, this is one night worth sampling. It runs from 9pm to 3am and costs £8 (£7 members). Tel 01273 772770.
SHAKE AND FINGER POP, Sussex Arts Club, Brighton, Sept 5: The promoters behind Da Doo Ron Ron - the Sixties girl group club - are launching another night for fans of that decade's music. Shake And Finger Pop will be playing the floor-fillers guaranteed to have Brightonian soul boys (and girls) standing up to get down. Expect stacks of soul, especially of the Motown and northern varieties, a bundle of beat and a soupon of ska. It runs from 11.30pm to 2am and admission is £4 on the door. Tel 01273 778020.
URBANSOUL, Arc, Brighton, Sept 6: UrbanSoul returns tomorrow for another of its first Saturday of the month outings. Mick Fuller is, by his own admission, not a "consummate professional" (my description), although he does admit to being "professional". This time round he's joined by Dave Jones for the usual mix of soulful club grooves and tuneful music. It looks like the ideal night out for those of a sound mind. And remember - it's completely free so you can spend your money on looking dapper rather than getting in. The night runs from 9pm to 2am. Admission free all night. Tel 01273 770505.
CLUB DIY, Concorde 2, Brighton, Sept 6: Nottingham's infamous deep housers return to Brighton tomorrow for the second and final Club DIY of 2003. Their first visit was one of the best nights out in Brighton I've had this year. There was great music and a fantastic crowd - and I'm looking for a repeat performance at the very least. This time round they've got Positive's Magnus Asberg warming up with Digs & Woosh, Simon DK and Emma to follow. From 10pm to 3am. £7.50 in advance from Rounder Records, Covert Records and Hedonizm Records (more on the door). Tel 01273 772770.
BOYGIRL, Ocean Rooms, Brighton, Sept 6: The Good Times 3 album has been out a couple of weeks but that isn't going to stop the Boygirl crowd from throwing a launch party to celebrate. Joey Jay, the London Xpress DJs and DJ Damien will be on hand to lead the celebrations, which is a damned fine line-up, however you look at it. Boygirl has some strong nights pencilled in for the next few weeks so watch this space. From 10pm to 3am. Admission is £8 (£5 NUS 'til 11pm). Tel 01273 699069.
