Two off-duty policemen had to jump for their lives after ram raiders struck at an off-licence.
The officers tried to prevent them driving away from Unwins in Queens Parade, Hangleton, Brighton, on Friday night.
The suspects drove straight at the officers before speeding off in a green Suzuki Vitara towards Blatchington windmill.
The alarm was raised by a taxi driver who saw the 4x4 driven across the pavement and into the off-licence window at 11.30pm.
The officers, one from Sussex and the other from the Metropolitan force, are believed to have been passing.
The vehicle, which had been stolen earlier in the evening, was abandoned in Chalky Road, Portslade.
Police were examining film from CCTV cameras.
The driver was white and wore a light-coloured jumper with a hood. His passenger wore dark trousers, a dark T-shirt and a baseball cap.
