Both Littlehampton manager Carl Stabler and chairman Andy Taylor missed their trip to Southwick due to work commitments and had to pick up the details of a 6-2 triumph.
Steve Bates, who was left in charge with Andy Baumfield, said: "While the manager's away the players will play it seems.
"We have been having trouble scoing but without slating Southwick, they were not at their best against us."
The Marigolds shot into a 2-0 lead as Steve Kirkham scored twice early on and he completed a hat-trick as Steve Tabor, Ryan Gaylor and Jan Miller also found the net.
East Preston took the lead at Saltdean through Simon Clayton on 18 minutes but Mark Curram levelled four minutes later and Dan Jordan grabbed the winner.
Selsey went ahead at Steyning in the 57th minute through Jim Robertson but Danny Gainsford equalised five minutes later.
James Hannah bagged the winner just five minutes from time with a volley through a melee of players.
East Grinstead lost 2-0 at Newbury and Ringmer 3-0 at Thatcham. Pat Harding grabbed two goals at Moneyfields but Hassocks lost 4-2.
Wick were beaten 1-0 at home by Raynes Park Vale.
