It was encouraging to see the objective and accurate article (The Argus, September 3) about the empty properties campaign we are pursuing in Worthing.
We have been working on bringing properties back into use for several years but it is only now, with the Government's intention to introduce Empty Homes Management Orders, that we have been given some opportunity to get to terms with a tricky problem.
Worthing borough officers are working across departments to compile the data we need to encourage an owner to work with us in creating a home for someone who needs it.
We have many empty properties and many homeless or people in temporary accommodation who need housing.
We are working tirelessly but the problem is not straightforward.
Apart from legal issues and the Data Protection Act, officers have to unravel issues over ownership.
Owners can be abroad or the property can belong to a large company which has no interest in our housing problems.
The owner can also be totally unaware of their ownership or other family-related issues.
We are working in wards which need more help in revitalising the housing scene.
Heene, Central and Selden are first on our list but we are asking all existing known owners to help with the campaign.
A copy of the empty properties strategy can be obtained from Portland House.
So, residents, it's over to you. We look forward to hearing your views and working with you.
