Robin Anderson, a former Mid Sussex reporter for The Argus, has died aged 79.
After years with the paper, he became one of the most successful editors of the Mid Sussex Times in Haywards Heath.
Mr Anderson, who retired to Scotland to look after his wife who was in poor health, died in a cottage hospital in Lanton-by-Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
He started reporting in Scotland, saw active service in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and came to Mid Sussex soon afterwards.
With his wife, Heather, he lived in Keymer Road and then Park Road in Burgess Hill.
Mr Anderson was held in high regard by colleagues when he moved to The Argus, both for his extensive knowledge and his fairness.
His successor in the role, Phil Dennett, said: "He was one of the last great old-style district reporters who lived on their patch and knew it inside out.
"As an editor, he was able to achieve success and also retain the respect of everyone for his kindness and humanity, which is what I shall remember him for more than anything else."
Mr Anderson was also Press officer for the South of England Show at Ardingly.
He joined the Round Table and later the Rotary Club in Haywards Heath.
The Round Table launched the Dolphin Fair, which at one time held the All England Beard Championships. Mr Anderson attracted national publicity for the event and showed his devotion by also growing a beard.
He cared for his wife until she died and later made visits to Mid Sussex to see old friends.
After a private funeral, his ashes and those of his wife will be scattered on the Downs.
He leaves two sons and four grandchildren.
