The policeman's lot is not always a happy one, but a rooftop resting spot will brighten up our bobbies' days.
The oasis has been established to give police a break from the stress of their work.
The sweet aromas of lavender and rosemary drift through the air on the roof terrace above Brighton police station in John Street.
The terrace, usually the domain of seagulls, has undergone a £600 transformation, complete with garden chairs, tables and plants.
Bamboo screens surround the terrace to provide a tropical ambience overlooking the city.
Garden designer Caroline Maguire, who runs Aspect Gardens, said she had tried to provide officers and civilian staff with a haven of calm for their breaks.
She said: "It is a bit like a Ground Force makeover with plants for all year round. It will give people somewhere completely different to visit."
Miss Maguire, 31, an ex-air hostess and a former news presenter with Brighton-based Surf Radio, launched her business this year after taking a gardening course.
The garden has been paid for by the police station social club, which is supported by the station staff.
Inspector Wendy Burton, one of 300 people who work there, said: "Policing can be a very stressful job and a little sanctuary like this is a good idea."
