Chief Constable Ken Jones has failed the people of Brighton and Hove. When he was appointed he promised the policy would be active community policing.
What has happened is the removal of police from the Clock Tower and other parts of the city, replaced by civilian observers with no powers.
Meanwhile, we have crime out of control in St James's Street, five minutes from Brighton's main police station and drug dealers openly operating on Brighton beach.
Thieves, drunks, beggars, louts, window-smashers and graffiti artists are operating with impunity.
What the citizens of this great city want, Mr Jones, is police on our streets every day, operating a zero tolerance approach to crime.
A couple of incidents a few months ago in North Laine sum up the problems.
One resident experienced violent harassment, another a nasty racial incident. Phone calls and letters to the police produced no response.
Only when I went to John Street police station to make an official complaint did the police finally see the two residents.
We don't want excuses, Mr Jones. If you can't provide the protection that people need you should step aside for someone else who can deliver.
-John Pearce, North Laines representative
