An airliner carrying 197 passengers had to turn back and make an emergency landing an hour into a flight.
The Excel Airwaves flight, which took off from Gatwick at about 8.30am today, was heading for Funchal, Portugal.
It turned around after when crew reported a fault.
The aircraft landed safely but crews from West Sussex Fire Brigade and the British Airport Authority Fire Service were on the runway to ensure the safety of the plane, passengers and staff.
It is the third emergency landing at Gatwick this month.
A Boeing 757 was diverted from Birmingham after crew began experiencing handling difficulties two weeks ago.
On the same night, 70 passengers had to leave a plane which was forced to land when crew smelt burning in the cockpit.
