A young man suffered cuts and bruises after being repeatedly punched and kicked by three men.
The victim, in his 20s, was walking towards Eastbourne Pier when he was confronted.
One of them tripped the man up but as he struggled to get up, he was punched by another offender and fell to the ground again.
He was then punched and kicked several times before a porter from a nearby hotel came to his aid as the offenders ran off.
The victim was taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital suffering two black eyes, cuts and swelling to his nose.
Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack, which happened between 11.10pm and 11.15pm on Friday.
One of the men was white, aged about 20, slim, 5ft 9in, with short blond hair. He was wearing a light coloured T-shirt.
