Craig Kelly stepped up in class with an impressive display in the BEMSEE club's Nationwide Supersport 400 series at Brands Hatch.

Kelly, from Sompting, normally competes in the Rookie 400 class but stepped up to Supersport with unexpected success.

Having started 24th on the grid, Kelly got a great start in the first race and was soon up to 11th place before finishing 12th.

In race two, Kelly finished 12th again and he followed that with an 11th and a ninth on Sunday.

He said: "I have tried to slow things down a bit this year in order to get a smoother ride.

"I thought I would try the Supersport and I tried some new tyres as well. I really didn't expect to be scoring points."

In the same series, Crowborough's Simon Nicholls maintained sixth place in the standings with a third, a fourth and two fifth places.

Nicholls also won both Clubman 400 races.

Peacehaven's Kevin Stone enjoyed a good day in the Supersport 600 and Clubman 600. He finished eighth and ninth in Saturday's Supersport races, then eighth and seventh on Sunday.

In two Clubman races, Stone was an impressive fifth and fourth. He said: "In the last Clubman race, I high-sided it and half came off. I got back on, rejoined in 18th place and finished fourth.

"I was really pleased with the weekend. Hopefully that will move me up again."

Stone is gaining experience in Clubman races, thanks mainly to the Telscombe Tavern who paid his entry fees at Brands Hatch. He said:"My confidence is coming back after my crash at Brands earlier in the season.

"I am hoping to do one of the MRO Championship rounds before the end of the season, at Lydden Hill or Snetterton."

Steve Bullimore's title hopes in the Nationwide Supertwins series may be over. The Haywards Heath racer arrived at Brands Hatch with a 75-point lead over main rival Brian Giles.

However, Bullimore suffered a bad crash in practice on Friday which left him in hospital with a broken collarbone.

Giles recorded two wins and two seconds from the four races to move 15 points ahead of Bullimore. It is unlikely Bullimore will be able to ride at the final round on October 12/13.

Crawley's Dave Lodge was fifth in all four races.

In the Minitwins class, Brighton's Ryan Harris now trails series leader Chris Firmin by 32 points. Harris and Firmin recorded a win and a second place each in Saturday's two races but Harris could only manage a ninth and a third on Sunday. Firmin was second in both races.
